NPTU Charleston

What is the Nuclear Power Training Unit?

Since its establishment in 1989, the Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU) has trained and sent to the fleet more than 1,000 Sailors each year. Throughout the next 20 years, the Unit will train more than 37,000 Sailors on the fundamental principles of safe nuclear operations and watch standing. This will prepare them for service on submarines and aircraft carriers.

Training Requirements

The Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program’s unique training requirements are met by special purpose training facilities, staffed by highly qualified instructors who are both military and Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel. These facilities include Moored Training Ships, which provide hands-on training and ensure that before their first sea tour, all operators have qualified on an operating naval nuclear propulsion plant.

Moored Training Ships are submarines that have been decommissioned and converted for use as training platforms for training naval nuclear operators.

Reactor Operations Training Engineers

Our Reactor Operations Training Engineers, who are Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel, participate in training at the NPTU in Charleston alongside naval nuclear officers. During this training, they apply decision making and problem-solving skills to develop a solid foundation of operational and interpersonal skills. They also work side by side with the Navy to qualify nuclear operators.
