FMP employees who work at Naval Nuclear Laboratory help local children prepare for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through our support of schools, universities, and educational outreach programs. The programs listed below represent some of the events we have supported.
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory locations that support each activity are marked using the following codes: P = Pittsburgh, PA. NY = Schenectady and Saratoga Springs, NY. C = Charleston, SC. I = Idaho Falls, ID.
The SciTech fair at Carnegie Science Center is a semiannual event where students across the Pittsburgh region attend to see STEM applied in industry. We host a display to educate middle and high school students about nuclear power, naval propulsion, and what we do to support the U.S. Navy. (P)
Our employee volunteer organization and Diversity Council have teamed up to bring science demonstration, math tutoring and “visiting scientists” programs to this inner city school. It is geared toward third and fourth grade students to help prepare them for New York State math and science exams. (NY)
A program designed to enhance the fourth grade electricity curriculum. Magnetism and high voltage static electricity are demonstrated in this hair-raising program. (NY)
A national math competition supported in Schenectady and Saratoga schools. (NY)
A program where employee volunteers demonstrate Newton’s Laws of Physics with a dramatic demonstration using model rockets. (NY)
SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Building a SeaPerch ROV teaches basic skills in ship and submarine design and encourages students to explore naval architecture and marine and ocean engineering principles. It also teaches basic science and engineering concepts, tool safety and technical procedures. Students learn important engineering and design skills and are exposed to all the exciting careers that are possible in naval architecture and naval, ocean and marine engineering. (P, NY)
Hands-on science demonstrations for students from three Ballston Spa Elementary schools. (NY)
