Naval Nuclear Laboratory - Core Materials, Manufacturing, & Irradiations Department is looking for a mechanical engineer to join the irradiations hardware engineering team. In this position, the successful candidate will work work with a talented group of engineers to develop irradiations testing hardware, equipment, and tooling for use at the Naval Reactors Facility (NRF) and the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) supporting materials development and technology. This position provides the opportunity to utilize and develop mechanical design and problem solving skills while developing innovative mechanical exam components and systems for use in remote environments.
Responsibilities include mechanical and structural design and analysis, hands-on testing and development, and working with vendors and machine shops to bring your designs to life. Primary design and analysis functions include development of 3D part models, sketches / drawings, structural calculations / Finite Element Analysis, and tolerance and alignment studies typically culminating in a technical design submittal. Technical support duties include, but are not limited to, purchase order follow (e.g., preparing the technical requirements package and responding to vendor submittals), preparing equipment installation / operation documents, and providing field support for the components deployed at NRF and ATR. This position provides the opportunity for hands-on development, testing, and troubleshooting in Bettis labs and at vendor facilities. This position requires interfacing with personnel from multiple departments and sites in various engineering and science disciplines through verbal, written, and in-person communications. This engineer will also work with team members and stakeholders to define project scope and schedules and develop technical documentation and recommendations.
This position also includes occasional travel to facilities in Idaho as well as travel to various vendor facilities (some local).
BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six years of relevant experience; or
MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience;
BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of nine years of relevant experience; or
MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of seven years of relevant experience.

Experience with CAD software
Proficient in Microsoft Office products
Demonstrated written communication and interpersonal skills

Job Preferred Skills
Previous experience in mechanical equipment design, analysis, or support.
Experience with remotely operated equipment.
A working knowledge of engineering software packages such as Creo, Mathcad, and ANSYS.
Previous experience with technical specifications and design basis documents such as ASME BPVC or NNL internal design documents.
Previous experience working with vendors and/or developing technical requirements specifications.
