Job Description

At the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), we develop advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, ensuring the safety and reliability of our Navy’s submarine and aircraft carrier fleets. NNL has an opening for a highly skilled Materials scientist. This individual will work in an advanced materials characterization laboratory and be responsible for operating and maintaining one or more SEM analytical systems. Work will include microstructural and microchemical characterization utilizing field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques. Analysis work will include failure analysis investigations, characterization of manufacturing induced features, analysis of material microstructure and chemistries to understand the fundamentals of corrosion and cracking mechanisms. The successful candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment as part of a team of scientists managing multiple techniques. They will be expected to work with work requestors and peers to develop and execute plans for analyzing samples that meet high expectations for quality.

Work responsibilities include, and are not limited to:

  • Analysis and interpretation of comprehensive SEM/EBSD/EDS data sets

  • Execution of experiments involving analytical measurements on test specimens

  • Communication of results through both oral presentations and written reports

  • Radiological and non-radiological materials characterization

  • Cross training / back-up support on other characterization tools

  • Participation in multi-disciplinary investigations with engineers and other material scientists specializing in other complementary analytical techniques (e.g. FIB/SEM, EPMA, XRD, XRF, Auger, ESCA, AEM)

  • Identify and drive efforts to improve efficiency and capabilities

  • Ensuring state-of-the-art capabilities and equipment are maintained within the laboratory through procurement planning
