Job Description

Are you early in your electrical engineering career and looking for a new challenge? Do you have a passion for electrical machines and using software to create models that describe them? Are you interested in power electronics, energy conversion, or embedded systems?  If yes, don’t pass on this opportunity to truly make a difference while growing your skills and experience! The Naval Training and Simulation (NTS) department at Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is looking for you to join our team.

NTS designs, develops, deploys, and maintains training simulators for the US Navy at training sites across the US. The NTS Electrical/Computer Engineer will use GUI-based tools and C++ code to develop real-time software models simulating various complex electrical machines for new and existing simulators, which may include motors, generators, breakers, power electronic converters, batteries, power distribution grids, and embedded control systems. Through this work, the engineer will gain a valuable understanding of the operation of various Navy reactor, propulsion, electrical, and control systems via research and design, implementation, and hands-on testing of several simulator systems. These simulators are used to train Naval Nuclear Operators on current and future Naval ship classes.

The successful candidate will work in an agile, team-oriented development environment in roles that may include researching, planning, designing, modeling, analyzing, documenting, testing, and presenting your engineering solutions. You will apply your knowledge, creativity, engineering design and analysis, as well as software modeling and troubleshooting skills daily to exciting and challenging assignments.

Skills we are looking for:

  • Experience with the design or analysis of electric machines, electrical grids (generation and/or distribution), power electronics, or electric vehicles
  • Experience with embedded electrical control systems and software
  • Experience with real-time engineering model development, preferably for simulation
  • Proficiency and demonstrated interest in software programming, preferably with C/C++
  • Experienced working in a collaborative team environment to solve technical problems

What we offer:

The diversity in work opportunities and collective expertise of the community within NTS provides engineers the opportunity to continue gaining technical skills and broadening their experience throughout their careers while making a true impact. Through engaging, hands-on work, NTS engineers support simulation products from concept through delivery that directly serve sailors in the Fleet.
