About Us

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is seeking a motivated individual to join the Nuclear Analysis Development team. You will have the opportunity to perform neutronics analysis supporting validation and deployment of state-of-the-art reactor physics analysis software. The newest team member will work on developing new analytical approaches for use on modern high-performance computing platforms to improve the accuracy and efficiency of calculations supporting naval nuclear design, fleet operations, and criticality safety. Data mining of benchmark experiments will be leveraged to push the boundaries of reactor physics methods and nuclear data.

 

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience; or
  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or
  • PhD degree in engineering or Doctoral degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university; or
  • Currently or previously NPE qualified or CTE/ACRS and one year of EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program; or
  • Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and one year as SRE

Preferred Skills

  • PhD or MS in Nuclear Engineering or Engineering Physics
  • Experience with (or coursework in) nuclear analysis using modern reactor physics solvers
  • Experience with (or coursework in) nuclear design, reactor performance, and criticality safety
  • Demonstrated scripting/programming skills
  • Practical application of diffusion theory, discrete ordinates methods, Monte Carlo, and/or statistical analysis to solve nuclear engineering problems
  • Practical application of data mining and analysis
