About Us

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. Job Description

Prototype Engineering provides the Kesselring Site with quality engineering products to support the maintenance and operational needs of the prototype.  These products ensure the successful and timely completion of planned maintenance periods and provide prompt and effective resolution to emergent issues that impact the ability of the prototype to perform its mission.  The Prototype Engineering Mechanical Engineering unit provides engineering support for the prototype's in-hull mechanical systems and off-hull mechanical safety systems and components.  The Advanced Prototype Mechanical Engineer will perform engineering evaluations and analysis and make engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks.  The successful candidate will be required to interface with multiple groups/individuals including system operators, other engineering organizations, compliance organizations, customers, procurement personnel, crafts and trades personnel and subcontractors. 

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or; MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience or; Currently or previously NPE qualified or CTE/ACRS and one year of EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program or Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and one year as SRE

Preferred Skills

Previous Naval Nuclear Plant operations experience, familiarity with prototype maintenance and testing, and safety system design or operational experience.  Previous experience in design community, previous experience with writing maintenance/repair procedures.

Pay Range

$82,600 - $123,800 annually

Salaries are based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.
