About Us

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. Job Description

The Advanced Mechanical Design group at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated, self-driven mechanical engineer for future core design development.  The group is focused on (1) defining the design space and technology required for a next generation attack submarine targeting high-level notional goals; (2) the advent of mechanical improvements to solve existing fleet challenges through the development of new and novel mechanical concepts; and (3) evaluating core cost versus performance capability trade-offs.  This program is currently in the pre-conceptual design phase and evaluations may be performed with simple, first-principles based scoping tools up through detailed analyses utilizing the latest structural analysis codes.  The successful candidate will have ownership of their work and the necessary collaboration with stakeholders.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or;

MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience 

Preferred Skills

  • Ability to work or lead in a team environment
  • Experience with ABAQUS and structural analysis 
  • Experience with design drawings and/or manufacturing processes
  • Desire to promote innovation
  • Proven effectiveness in technical writing and presentations
