About Us

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. Regulated Materials Shipper

The Naval Nuclear Lab seeks to add a team member to execute bulk and non-bulk shipments of Regulated Materials such as:

  • Hazardous Waste
  • Chemical Waste
  • Asbestos Waste
  • PCB Waste
  • Universal Waste

The position requires coordinating with the waste vendor to transport and dispose of the waste in compliance with federal, state, and local rules and regulations.  The position requires teaming with NNL employees responsible for the material characterization, packaging, and storage at the site. 

The primary responsibilities include:

  • Material characterization and shipping name validation
  • Shipment paperwork preparations and/or review
  • Ability to interpret regulations such as 49 CFR, 40 CFR, 6NYCRR, etc.
  • Overseeing material preparation and loading for each shipment
  • Completion of internal post shipment documentation
  • Post shipment recordkeeping for shipping documents
  • Communicating shipment information into various regulatory reports

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelor's degree in a technical, engineering or science-related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or;
Master's degree in a degree in a technical, engineering or science-related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience or;
Currently or previously NPE qualified or CTE/ACRS and one year of EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program or Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and one year as SRE

Preferred Skills

DOT hazmat shipper certification

RCRA training and knowledge

TSCA PCB training and knowledge

40-hour HAZWOPER certification

Asbestos knowledge
